Florida Power Morcellators Attorney
Zimmerman & Frachtman Attorneys – Assisting Those Harmed After Surgery That Involved Power Morcellation
The decision to have a hysterectomy is a difficult one for many women. Not only is it major surgery, but the hysterectomy procedure can also be an emotional ordeal since it marks the end of a woman’s ability to bear a child.
In an effort to lessen the trauma of hysterectomies, surgeons have developed minimally invasive techniques that result in much quicker recovery times and far less chances of hemorrhage. Unfortunately, one of these methods utilizing ‘power morcellation’, has recently been found to potentially spread cancer.

Using a power morcellator, a surgeon makes a tiny incision and inserts the instrument with tiny, rotating blades into the woman’s abdomen. The morcellator minces the uterus into tiny morsels that are pulled out of the cavity. The problem occurs when a non-detectable cancer in the uterus is chopped up and gets left behind in crevasses in the pelvis. When spread by power morcellation, this uterine sarcoma is much more deadly.
Recent medical studies reveal that the risks associated with power morcellation are not limited to women undergoing hysterectomies. Removal of benign fibroid tumors using power morcellators can cause the fibroid tumors to “seed” in other areas, causing the need for further surgery down the road, not to mention the greater threat of spreading unknown cancer cells. Even minimally invasive spleen and renal surgeries using power morcellation can spread cancer, causing the dangers posed by the technique to threaten men as well as women.
The FDA has discouraged the use of power morcellators as recently as April of 2014. In response to this, Johnson and Johnson immediately pulled its power morcellators awaiting further rulings by the FDA. According to the Food and Drug Administration, using power morcellators can potentially spread cancer in one of every 350 patients. High profile court cases have been waged, drawing public attention to the deadly threat associated with this procedure, and hopefully those that are ready for the procedure can be warned before they are blindly subjected to the risks of power morcellation.
