Crestor – Risk Of Diabetes

Crestor is a type of statin drug that has been used to medically control cholesterol. In 2010, after receiving the results of Crestor’s performance in the JUPITER trial, the FDA approved AstraZeneca’s request for the use of the drug for healthy individuals. It was decided that not only could Crestor be prescribed for cholesterol issues, but it could be marketed toward individuals with no known cardiovascular disease as a prevention method as well. The JUPITER trial also found negative injuries that can occur after using Crestor. These include Cardiomyopathy, Heart Attack, Rhabdomyolysis, Liver and Kidney Damage, and Diabetes.

It has been argued that despite the studies that showed the potential for injury, the drug Crestor was promoted and marketed as a safe drug. Crestor puts its users at an increased risk for Diabetes, and many users are unaware of this risk. More and more people are being affected because, while diet and exercise can be beneficial methods for reducing cholesterol, many people are using medications to help them with their cholesterol issues.

A study published in BMJ attests that AstraZeneca was aware of a 27% increased risk for new onset Diabetes. A Women’s Health Initiative Study found an almost 50% increase in new onset Diabetes in postmenopausal women. AstraZeneca did not make the increased Diabetes risk readily known to the public until the FDA required the company to add increased new onset Diabetes risk to the label in 2012.

The increased risk factor for new onset Diabetes and many other injuries have led to lawsuits being filed against AstraZeneca. The AstraZeneca Annual Report for 2012 stated that there were 15 Diabetes lawsuits in California alone. Due to the omission of information, the ingestion of the statin drug Crestor can increase the user’s risk for Diabetes without their being aware. Injured parties all across The United States have the right to have their cases heard. There is also the possibility that as more plaintiffs join the Crestor lawsuit, a multi-district litigation will need to be created, but each individual will still have the opportunity for their own court day.
