Baker Zimmerman & Perez Support Brain Injury Awareness Month

Parkland, FL  – The personal injury law firm of Zimmerman & Frachtman is proud to support The Brain Injury Association of America’s (BIAA) Brain Injury Awareness Month – March 2012. This year’s theme is Brain Injury: Anytime. Anywhere. Anyone.

“Brain Injury Awareness Month honors the millions of people with brain injury, who with proper acute care, therapeutic rehabilitation and adequate long-term supports, are living with the successes and challenges that each day brings. Our goals this year are to sustain and bolster brain injury programs, increase access to care and preserve vital brain injury research.” Susan H. Connors, president/CEO of the Brain Injury Association of America.
BIAA Brain Injury Facts:

  • 1.7 million people, including 475,000 children sustain a TBI in the U.S. each year. 3.1 million individuals live with a life-long disability as a result of a TBI.
  • 52,000 people will die. 275,000 people will be hospitalized. 1.365 million people will be treated and released from an emergency department.
  • TBI’s are caused by falls (35%); car crashes (17%), workplace accidents (16%), assaults (10%) and other (12%).
  • TBI’s are caused by falls (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the U.S.
  • TBI is a contributing factor to a third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the U.S.
  • About 75% of TBI’s that occur each year are concussions or other forms of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI).

According to Harvard Magazine some TBI injuries leave patients alive but unconscious or severely impaired. Others are seemingly mild, yet cause subtle but persistent changes in mood, memory, and cognitive abilities. Brain injuries extend beyond the physical injury and can unfold over long periods of time.

There have been great strides in education on reducing brain injuries (wearing seatbelts and helmets) and medical improvements that save lives; however, there is often a long and unknown recovery process. Having a catastrophic brain injury is often one of the most emotionally, financially and physically difficult times in the lives of both the survivor and their loved ones.

Florida Brain Injury Resource:

Florida residents can access the Brain Injury Association of Florida (BIAF). Their members are the 210,000 Floridians living with devastating injuries after brain injury and the 100,000 Floridians who experience brain injury each year. BIAF can be reach at 800-992-3442 or email at admin@biaf.org.

If you suspect that you or a friend or family member has experienced a TBI, seek immediate medical care.

Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is the country’s oldest and largest nationwide brain injury advocacy organization. BIAA’s mission is to be the voice of brain injury.
